If you’ve made the decision to have some carpet installed in your home, then you need to know how to care for it properly. You may think the only thing you need to do to keep your carpet clean is to use a vacuum. But a vacuum isn’t going to be much help if you happen to accidentally spill something on your carpet.

How to Clean Your Carpet

  • Vacuum your carpet regularly to prevent dirt from turning into permanent stains.
  • Have your carpet professionally cleaned every six to twelve months.
  • Use rugs and runners to help protect your carpet from foot traffic and dirt.

Stain Prevention

  • With proper care and special attention to accidental spills and satins, you can maintain your carpets and keep them looking new for many years.
  • Invest in a good spot treatment solution for carpet. That way, if you spill something, you can get it up and treat the area right away. Keep in mind, the longer spills remain on your carpet, the harder it is to clean them.
  • Be careful when selecting a cleaning solution. Always test it on an inconspicuous area of your carpet first prior to using it all over. This will give you a good idea of whether it is safe enough to use on your carpets or not. Some carpet cleaning solutions are too harsh and can cause premature bleaching and fading.
  • You don’t need to own a carpet cleaning machine in order to remove stains. For food stains, remove as much of the substance as possible. If you have trouble picking it up, use a spoon or knife to scoop it up. Afterwards, spray a tiny amount of water and carpet cleaning solution on the area. Allow it to set for a minute and then run a regular vacuum cleaner over the area for several minutes. Add more water if the stain is stubborn and continue to run the vacuum over it for several minutes more until the stain is gone.
